Abstract:
Jan Hayes (later Jan Hayes-Steinert) was an inventor and designer who developed and marketed products for the cosmetics industry in New York City. This collection contains Hayes's cosmetic product designs, corporate and industry marketing campaign drafts, patent and trademark correspondence, and other promotional and advertising material for an assortment of products. The collection documents some of Hayes's work for companies such as Kurlash, Revlon, Lilly Dache, and Juliette Marglen.

Scope and content:

Collection consists of Jan Hayes's collection of cosmetic product designs, corporate and industry marketing campaign drafts, patent and trademark correspondence, and other promotional and advertising material for an assortment of products, including: mascara dispensers and applicators, lipstick and lip liners, liquid rouge, foundation compacts, eye shadow and eye liners, and other skincare and beauty products. The collection documents some of Hayes's work for companies such as Kurlash, Revlon, Lilly Dache, and Juliette Marglen. Also contains a copy of Your Face After 30, Hayes' publication (dated 1978).

Brand or product names (ex: Evening Eyes) are capitalized when used in the folder titles. Items in quotations reflect original titling by Hayes; other folders have been assigned titles by library staff.

Dr. Jan Hayes-Steinert (d. 1988) was an inventor and designer who developed and marketed products for the cosmetics industry in New York City. She authored the book YOUR FACE AFTER 30, first published in 1978.

The Jan Hayes Collection was received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a purchase from Walkabout Books in 2024.
