Scope and content:

This series documents Heschel's personal and academic life and to a lesser degree the lives of his family members including Sylvia Heschel and Heschel's mother and siblings. The series includes materials associated with Heschel's schooling both in Poland and Germany, his emigration from Warsaw, Poland to London and then to the United States (including his efforts in locating and helping relatives, friends, and associates left behind in Europe during the war), his marriage to Sylvia, his time at Hebrew Union College (HUC) and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America (JTS), conferences and other engagements he attended, and posthumous tributes and awards. The series also includes materials related to Heschel's personal relationships with his mother and siblings, including letters from and about his mother and sister on the situation in Vienna and the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II, and his personal relationships with individuals such as Martin Buber, Ismar Elbogen, Louis Finkelstein, Maurice Friedman, Fritz Kaufmann, Wolfe Kelman, and Marshall Meyer. Family materials include those pertinent to Sylvia Heschel's career as a concert pianist, her personal correspondence with family members and friends, and composition and writing books for classes she took. Also included is a small assortment of letters from Susannah Heschel to her parents.

The types of materials in this series include calendars, photographs, handwritten notes, correspondence, telegrams and postcards, official documents such as school certificates, citizenship papers, and identification cards, programs, sheet music, typescripts, clippings, address books, roll books, student papers, and administrative documents from both HUC and JTS. The materials are arranged chronologically.
