Clifford Hildreth (1917-1995) was a professor emeritus of economics at the University of Minnesota. This collection documents his professional life through his correspondence and writings. It forms parts of the Economists' Papers Archive.

Scope and content:

This collection primarily includes correspondence, writings, and printed material. These materials mostly relate to Hildreth's work as an economist, as well as his roles as president of the American Statistical Association (1973) and with the Cowles Commission (1939-1955).

Biographical / historical:

Clifford Hildreth (1917-1995) was a white American academic economist who was born in Kansas and studied at the University of Kansas and Iowa State University. He taught at Iowa State, the University of Chicago, North Carolina State University, Michigan State University, and the University of Minnesota. He served as head of the Department of Economics at Michigan State, a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study of Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, and a Fulbright lecturer at the University of Tokyo, the University of Kyoto, and Hitotsubashi University. He was editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association from 1960-1965 and president of the American Statistical Association in 1973. His major contribution was the Hildreth-Lu estimation.

The Clifford Hildreth papers were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library as gifts between 1991-1994.
