African Volumes (AF), 1842-2010, undated

Extent:
37.5 Linear Feet (32 boxes)
Scope and content:

This series consists of research and preparation materials used in publishing Robert Hill's Marcus Garvey and United Negro Improvement Association Papers, Africa for the Africans (1921-1945). Annotated and indexed research documents and drafts from Hill's unfinished Volume VIII: October 1913-June 1921, are included in this series. Series 2 chronicles the development and activities of Marcus Garvey's "Africa for the Africans" movement in Africa, from 1921 through 1945. During this period, Garveyism expanded throughout sub-Saharan Africa and threatened colonial rule. African opposition to Garvey and his Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) intensified the debate concerning the role of African Americans in the emancipation of Africa. Also documented is colonial opposition to Garveyism as well as its political overlap with the start of the anticolonial movement during and immediately following World War II.
