Collection consists of two manuscript volumes written by Count Robert du Mesnil du Buisson, identified on the title page as "Inscriptions, signs, and drawings, collection on jars, pottery, and fragments of plaster found between the Palmyrene Gate and Tower 23, by Count du Mesnil du Buisson." The volumes appear undated, but an in-laid note, "Sur les indications au crayon qu' on retrouve sur ces dossiers," is dated 1959.
The volumes consist mostly of a collection of photographs and drawings documenting the various inscriptions and writings found on jars and other broken crockery at Dura-Europos' Palmyrene Gate and surrounding towers, in Syria. A note on the title page adds, "In appendice, inscriptions and signs found in Tower 25, in the surroundings (I) and in Block B2 (III) or kept in the storehouses of the Mission (II)."
Collection consists of Volume 1 (pages 1-297) and Volume 2 (pages 298-604). The last pages of Volume 2 contain a Table of Contents, which includes: 1. Inscriptions between Palmyrene Gate and Tower 18, L8 2. From Tower 18 3. From K8 4. From Tower 20 5. From K7 6. From Tower 21 7. From J8 8. From Tower 22 9. From J7 10. Count Robert du Mesnil du Buisson (9 April 1895, Champobert, Bourges – 8 April 1986, Caen) was a French historian, soldier, and archeologist. He was noted for his early use of geophysical survey for archaeology. He was son of Auguste, comte du Mesnil du Buisson and Berthe Roussel de Courcy, and married Jeanne Leclerc de Pulligny on 26 June 1923.
He was director of excavations at Qatna (el-Mishrifeh: 1924, 1927–29), Til-Barsip (Tell el-Ahmar: 1927, 1929–31), Hadatu (Arslan Tash, 1928), and was vice-director of excavations at Dura-Europos from 1932 to 1937 coordinated between Yale University led by Clark Hopkins and the French Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres. He discovered the Synagogue of Dura Europos and published on the synagogue's frescos in 1939. Among his other archeological finds were the Baalshamin and the Arslan Tash amulets.

- The volumes were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a transfer from the Duke University Classics Dept. in 2017. A bookplate on the items suggests they were originally held by Rostovtzeff-Welles Library in the American Society of Papyrologists.
