Collection includes collector cards for tobacco and other products; examples of direct marketing, packaging, and point-of-sale display materials; print, radio, and television advertisements for cigarettes and other tobacco products; research reports on tobacco use, health risks, and antismoking literature; and other materials relating to the advertising, marketing, and merchandising of tobacco products. Collection also includes materials relating to snuff and smokeless tobacco as well as electronic cigarettes and vaping materials, and includes a set of albums containing British and Irish tobacco advertisements compiled by Mardon, Son and Hall for the Imperial Tobacco Company.

Biographical / historical:

Robert K. Jackler is Professor Emeritus-Hourly, Otolaryngology (Head and Neck Surgery) at Stanford University School of Medicine and the founder of the Stanford Research Into The Impact of Tobacco Advertising (SRITA).

Robert Jackler was born in 1954. He attended Williston Northampton School (class of 1972) and received his medical degree from Boston University in 1979. From 1979-1984 he served a residency in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the University of California-San Francisco (UCSF). In 1985 Jackler was a fellow at the House Ear Clinic. He was on the faculty of UCSF from 1985-2003 before joining the Stanford University School of Medicine as Sewall Professor and Chair of the Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and professor in the Surgery and Neurosurgery departments (2003-2021). Jackler retired from clinical practice in 2024.

In 2007 Jackler founded the Stanford Research Into The Impact of Tobacco Advertising (SRITA), a research center that studied the effects of advertising particularly on youth smoking and tobacco use. SRITA amassed a large collection of tobacco-related advertisements which were eventually donated to the Smithsonian Institution. SRITA still maintains a digital collection available to researchers.
