Biographical / historical:

Jantzen Knitting Mills was a textile company founded in 1910 in Portland, Ore.

Portland Knitting Mills was established in 1910 by John A. Zehntbauer, Carl C. Jantzen, and C.R. Zehntbauer in Portland, Ore. Originally the company made a broad line of wool knit clothing, but a request from the Portland Rowing Club led to the development of a line of swimwear beginning around 1913. In 1918 the company changed its name to Jantzen Knitting Mills and began advertising its swimwear with a female "diving girl" dressed in red by 1920. Jantzen was acquired by Blue Bell in 1980; by VF Corporation in 1986; and in 2002 the brand was acquired by Perry Ellis International.
