Jason Moran (b. 1975) is a jazz pianist and composer. In 2009, Moran produced "IN MY MIND," a multimedia performance investigating Thelonious Monk's 1959 recording, "Monk at Town Hall." The performance included audio of conversations between Monk and Hall Overton.
In this oral history, Moran talks about the revelation of hearing W. Eugene Smith's recordings of Thelonious Monk, in particular the work sessions with Monk and Hall Overton as they prepared for the 1959 Town Hall concert. Moran discusses Monk's technical and artistic approach to creating music, his attitudes in person and in performances, and how the Town Hall concert was a radical experiment in jazz.
