Scope and content:

Steve Reich (b 1936) is a world-renowned composer who studied with Hall Overton, Vincent Persichetti, and Luciano Berio among others. He attended Cornell University, the Juilliard School, and Mills College. Reich is most notably recognized for his work in the field of minimal music.

In this oral history, Reich discusses his musical education at Cornell and later, with Hall Overton and Vincent Persichetti. Reich goes into detail about Overton's teaching style and philosophy, the value of what he learned in lessons, and what it was like to visit the Jazz Loft.
