Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) was one of the oldest and largest advertising agencies in the United States. It was headquartered in New York. Peter Dunham (1921-2011) worked at JWT from 1950-1974, primarily in international activities as a field representative and account manager. Collection includes correspondence; descriptions of JWT international field offices; travel itineraries for office visits by JWT executives including Dan Seymour and Tom Sutton. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Biographical / historical:

Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) was one of the oldest and largest advertising agencies in the United States. It was headquartered in New York. Peter Dunham (1921-2011) worked at JWT from 1950-1974, primarily in international activities as a field representative and account manager.

Peter Dunham was born May 3, 1921 in Cedarhurst, N.Y. He attended Harvard University (BA, 1943) and worked as several companies before joining JWT in 1950. Dunham served as a field service representative in international offices before moving into account management. He left JWT in 1974 and worked as a consultant. He died December 7, 2011 in Waterbury, Conn.

Acquisition information:
The J. Walter Thompson Company. Peter Dunham papers were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a gift from the J. Walter Thompson Company in 1987.
