Biographical / historical:

Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) was one of the oldest and largest advertising agencies in the United States. It was headquartered in New York. In 2023 the agency was absorbed into marketing and communications firm VML. John Sharman was an advertising executive who served as Chief Operating Officer from 1977-1983.

Leonard John Sharman was born September 9, 1923 in Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia. He joined JWT's Australian office upon finishing high school in 1941, then left to serve in the Australian army during World War II. He returned to JWT and rose to become Managing Director of JWT-Australia in 1962. He managed JWT-Asia/Pacific and Canada and was appointed Executive Vice President with JWT-New York in 1974. In 1977 Sharman was named Chief Operating Officer of JWT in 1977 and served until retiring in 1983. He returned to Australia and died in Wamberal in 1994.

The J. Walter Thompson Company. John Sharman papers were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a gift from the J. Walter Thompson Company in 1987.
