Founded in 1864, the J. Walter Thompson Company (JWT) was one of the oldest and largest advertising agencies in the United States. It was headquartered in New York. In 2023 the agency was absorbed into marketing and communications firm VML. Collection includes account and campaign case studies; demographic studies; economic analyses; media studies; research reports; and other printed and audiovisual materials. Topics include advertising to women, children, and young adults; African American and Hispanic markets; beverages (alcoholic, coffee); broadcast media including radio and television; private label (house brand) products; product categories. J. Walter Source was founded around 1988 as an information-sharing ready reference library of research and analytical reports. Holdings were maintained by the New York and Chicago offices of JWT. The library was discontinued in the late 1990s with the increased use of electronic records distribution.

The J. Walter Thompson Company. J. Walter Source records were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a gift from the J. Walter Thompson Company in 2000.
