Jules Picot was a French chemist and inventor, active between the 1880s and around 1930.
According to court documents, "Phénix" a lye-based laundry detergent was originally developed through a partnership between Cerf Mayer-Levy, Gustave Alexandre and others in 1880. In 1886 Jules Picot of Paris purchased the rights to manufacture and market the detergent worldwide excluding France, Switzerland, Italy and Spain--Those countries had previously been licensed to the firm Redard et Cie in 1883. Jules Picot, working with patent agent Camille Blétry, applied for and received trademarks in a number of countries for "Lessive Phénix" using the image of a woman washing fabric superimposed by the "Lessive Phénix" brand, bird, and the signature "J. Picot". Picot's firm operated as a sole proprietership until around 1924, when it reorganized as Société anonyme de la lessive "Phénix" and continued at least through the 1950s. Not to be confused with a similar product also marketed since 1903 under the brand name Phénix, by Henri Pintaud of France.
