William P. Littell was an advertising executive at the Chicago office of Ruthrauff & Ryan (a subsidiary of the Interpublic Group) from 1922-1964. The William Littell papers include photographs, biographical information, correspondence, writings and other printed materials. The bulk of the collection consists of materials compiled for an advertising instructional course and proposed public relations campaigns for Barry Goldwater and Richard Nixon. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

The William Littell papers include photographs, biographical information, correspondence, writings and other printed materials. The bulk of the collection consists of materials compiled for an advertising instructional course and proposed public relations campaigns for Barry Goldwater and Richard Nixon.

Biographical / historical:

William P. Littell was an advertising executive at the Chicago office of Ruthrauff & Ryan from 1922-1964.

William Paul Littell was born in 1901 in Illinois. He began working at Ruthrauff & Ryan in Chicago in 1922. Littell was named Vice president in 1933 and elected a Director in 1943. Littell served as Manager of the Chicago Office until his retirement in 1964. He died in 1990 in Illinois.

Ruthrauff & Ryan agency was founded in 1912 by Wilbur Ruthrauff and Fritz Ryan. The agency merged with Erwin Wasey in 1957 and became Erwin Wasey Ruthrauff & Ryan (EWR&R). The agency was acquired by the Interpublic Group in 1963 and Ruthrauff & Ryan dropped from the name in 1964.

The William P. Littell papers were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a gift in 2020.
