Abstract:
David Long (1843-1924) served as Postmaster of the Midway (Davidson Co.), N.C. post office from 1875-1907. Collection includes correspondence; advertising mailings and fliers; personal and registered mail receipts; audit reports and other printed materials. Much of the material relates to Long's interactions with mail order companies promoting products and services including books; career and business opportunities; and patent medicines and curative programs. There are also materials relating to Democratic political activity during the 1908 election, and materials from the American Surety Company and Star Route Mail Service concerning private mail route bids and contracts. Mail order firms represented include American Book Company, Atlanta Constitution, Clark's, Curtis Publishing, David C. Cook, Doubleday Page, Franz Huld, Huber Manufacturing, Fleming H. Revell, L.C. Smith & Bros., Mast Crowell & Kirkpatrick, Minter Company, N.D. Thompson Publishing, Presbyterian Board of Publication, Royster Guano, Stone & Barringer, Wells & Richardson, and World's Dispensary Medical Association. Acquired as part of the John W. David Long (1843-1924) self-identified as a farmer who also served as Postmaster of the Midway (Davidson Co.) post office from 1875 until 1907, the year the post office closed and mail began to be routed through the Lexington office.
