Series spans from the 1950s-2011 and covers three projects originating from Lyon's time documenting the Texas prison system, several of the prisoners he befriended, and related audiovisual materials.
Photograph materials include vintage prints developed in Texas and New York in the 1960s and those developed by Magnum in the 1970s-1980s, contact sheets featuring unused and selected shots featured in Conversations with the Dead (Conversations) and other exhibitions featuring each of the units Lyon visited while in Texas, modern gelatin silver exhibition prints prepared by Chuck Kelton, and oversize book dummy material for a precursor text referred to as Text of Imprisonment. Files include maquettes and drafts related to Conversations, materials related to the unpublished version produced alongside Texas prisoners, Born to Lose, prison records and mugshots mainly collected in Texas, correspondence from Lyon as well as Billy McCune, James Ray Renton, Dinker Cassell, publishers, and other select individuals, research files particularly related to Renton and Cassell, artwork by McCune, manuscripts and drafts by Lyon and McCune, legal records, clippings, and other assorted files. Audiovisual materials include film and audio recordings of different units and prisoners.
