Labor and Activism Papers, 1920s-1950s

Scope and content:

This series contains publications, printed materials, administrative materials, and other items related to the organizations, people, events, and causes with which Lucy Mason was involved. Materials in this series largely document Mason's work with and interest in labor unions, union-affiliated organizations, and Christian organizations, including the CIO, the Federal Council of Churches and its Department of Church and Economic Life, Highlander Folk School, the National Religion and Labor Foundation, the Southern Conference Educational Fund (SCEF), the Southern Conference for Human Welfare, the Southern Regional Council (SRC), the Southern School for Workers, and the Textile Workers Union of America (TWUA). Materials in this series also highlight Mason's interest in voting issues, pacifism, interracial cooperation, and racial equality and civil rights for Black Americans. Also included in this series are writings and speeches by others, as well as works in appreciation of Lucy Mason. Of note are appreciations from Black citizens in Richmond, VA, praising Mason's social work towards interracial cooperation and equality in that city, which can be found in the "Works about Lucy Mason" file.

Processing information:

The vast majority of this series was previously described by library staff as "Miscellany" and "Printed Materials." Upon reprocessing in 2025, the processor grouped these materials into more descriptive categories; they do not represent original groupings created by Lucy Mason.
