Italy -- Politics and government, 1718-1943

Extent:
2444 items
Scope and content:

This large series contains 2444 items and includes formats such as pamphlets, almanacs, newspapers, clippings, and broadsides, some quite large. Some items contain illustrations, usually photographs or charts, but also engravings. The genres represented are quite varied, including many speeches, articles, reports, and propagandistic literature, which can include poetry.

As with the category "Italy -- History," this series covers virtually every important aspect of Italian politics, particularly of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Because Mazzoni was elected a Senator in 1910, many of the pamphlets are Parliamentary speeches or reports, and often concern issues of the early Fascist regime. Many involve reports or proposals of government-supported public works. One large sub-group contains propagandistic pieces from the Fascist regime up to 1943, including events such as the passing of racial laws, and related propaganda.

Individuals represented under the heading "Italy -- Politics and government" include: Marsilio da Padova, Niccolo` Machiavelli, Cesare Balbo, Massimo D'Azeglio, Giuseppe Mazzini, Guido Mazzoni, F. T. Marinetti, Gabriele D'Annunzio, Benito Mussolini, Gian Galeazzo Ciano, Luigi Chiarini, Guido Baccelli, Marco Minghetti, Agostino Depretis, Pietro Badoglio, Antonio Labriola, Guglielmo Oberdan (S), Francesco Crispi, Giovanni Giolitti, Sidney Sonnino, and many more names both well-known and unknown.

Not included in this subject heading are works about the lives of individual political men: these biographical works would be located under that person's name (in the "Other Name" field), and the subject heading "Biography."
