Musicology, 1862-1942
- Extent:
- 184 items
- Scope and content:
-
This is a small series numbering only 184 items. Pamphlets, newspapers, periodicals, and clippings predominate as formats.
Occasionally Mazzoni collected or was sent pieces concerning the study or criticism of music. Many items, however, are also found in newspapers or periodicals he kept for other reasons. A good number are reviews of particular music performances in Italy and abroad. Quite a few pieces discuss regional Italian music traditions.
Individual names connected with this subject heading include: Giuseppe Mazzini (S), Ottavio Rinuccini (S), Richard Wagner (S), Angelo Poliziano (S), Hans Sachs (S), Giuseppe Verdi (S), Gaetano Donizetti (S), Pier Luigi da Palestrina (S), Joseph Haydn (S), Guido D'Arezzo (S), and Giacomo Puccini (S).
Not usually found in this series are collections of songs with little critical commentary, lyrics to individual songs, or libretti. These items would be located under "Songs" or "Librettos." For related works, see "Italy--Social Life and Customs." There will be some areas of overlap due to catalogers' decisions.
