Italy -- Description and Travel, 1717-1942

Extent:
565 items
Scope and content:

This series includes 565 items which represent a variety of formats including pamphlets, brochures, tourist guides, newspapers, and clippings. Many of the materials are illustrated, some with fine engravings.

Any materials concerning travel in Italy or descriptions of localities in Italy are found under this subject heading. One main sub-group is made up of tourist guides to Italian cities and sites, most from the nineteenth century; sites may include ruins, churches, villas, and estates. These materials also may be of interest for their advertising content. As with many of the subject categories, one can find several genres represented, including poetry and fiction, though the preponderance of material is documentary.

Important individuals found in this group include: Michel Montaigne, Gabriele Rosa, Touring Club Italiano (A), Charles-Nicolas Cochin, Georges Sand (S), and Giuseppe Mazzini (S).

Materials not included under this heading are guides to museum collections in a particular city, for example, or any materials that have a more sociological, scientific, or linguistic focus. A scientific study of a popular hot spring's water chemistry, for example, would be classified under "Science -- Italy."
