Wang Cheng (b.1935) and Lin Yucui (b. 1938) recollect that it was most difficult around 1960. There was only (wild) vegetable soup available at the canteen, and people were always hungry. A lot of them suffered from edema because of hunger. Wang talked about making delicacies out of coarse food, such as using corn and yam to makeing "sweet and sour rib"dish.
王成,1935年生。林玉翠,1938年生。两位老人回忆60年前后在食堂吃饭基本上只有菜粥,野菜替代粮食,填不饱肚子。人们因为饥饿而浮肿的情况很多。王老人讲到"粗粮细作'和"代食品",比如:用玉米和地瓜做的"糖醋排骨"。
