Ma Fuying | 马福英, 2011

Scope and content:

Ma Fuying (b.1927) is a resident of Wanbaochang Village, Tongchang Town, Yimen County, Yunnan Province. 1959 when the famine started, her husband was sent to work on the construction of roads and dams. At home they could eat wild vegetables and very thin congee. Cooking was not allowed at home. Everyone had to work in order to get any food. Her father was in his 70s and had to work every day. He starved and had edema, eventually died. She had edema too and gynecological disorders. Most of the poor and lower-middle peasants survived the famine, many upper-middle peasants and rich landlords died of starvation. The transcript of this interview has been translated into English.

马福英1927年出生。1959年开始的那几年饥荒时,她的丈夫被派去修水库修公路等。她在家里吃野菜,米汤都喝不着。家里不准生火做饭,还要劳动。干劳动还可以发点吃的,不干劳动就没得吃。她父亲70多岁了,还要去干劳动,饿了,得水肿病死了。她因为饥饿得了水肿病和妇科病。村里的贫下中农没有饿死的很少,那些地主富农家的人,被饿死的多。
