Yu Manmei (b. 1944) is a resident of Mafen Village, Guangdong Province. In this interview, Yu recalls the difficult life during the Great Famine. When eating at the communal canteen, if someone was late, they could only get rice with water. Due to the shortage of grain, people had to eat wild vegetables and tree leaves. Lots of villagers developed edema. They had to work even on the day of the Chinese New Year, and they only had a bowl of sticky rice as a treat for the new year. However, only those who arrived early could get a full bowl of rice, while those who were late couldn't even get the rice.
余满妹1944年出生，是广东省惠州市横沥镇马坌村村民。在这段口述中，余老人回忆了大饥荒时期的困难生活。当时在大食堂吃饭，如果去晚了只能吃掺了水的饭，粮食不够就靠野菜、树叶充饥，许多村民都得了浮肿。年初一生产队还要干活，唯一的改善就是一碗糯米饭，不过只有早去的村民可以分得满满一碗，晚去的连饭都没有。
