Song Dengbao (b. 1933) is a resident of Beizhuang Village. In this interview Song recalls the difficult life during the Great Leap Forward. It was worst from 1958-60 when he had to work in the field in the day and carry ores to factories at night. Some people starved to death, many had chronic diseases because of the hardship. Things got a little better from 1963. The real improvement came when Deng Xiaoping became in charge.
