Pu Guizhi | 普桂芝, 2011

Scope and content:

Pu Guizhi (b.1942) is a resident of Wanbaochang Village, Tongchang Town, Yimen County, Yunnan Province. She said that her family was poor and she had no clothes when she was little. She started school at age 14, and quitted four years later. In 1960 when people ate at People's Commune canteen, they were so hungry that they looked for wild vegetables to eat. One of her relatives starved to death. She got married and moved to this village at age 19. Her first child was born in a cattle pen with help from a relative. The child died at 1. She took the baby to the field and left him by himself, the baby ate things from the ground and died that night. Later she gave birth to two more children and they survived.

普桂芝1942年出生。她家穷,小时候没有衣服穿。14岁才开始上学,只读到四年级就辍学了。1960年吃食堂时,人们找野菜充饥,她的一个亲戚饿死。她讲述自己19岁(1961年)嫁到该村,第一个孩子生在牛圈,自己接生,背着去干活,孩子扔在地里自己玩,抓灰吃,死了,死时1岁多。她后来的两个孩子都活了下来。
