Scope and content:

Xiong's thesis project is Mutual Players and consists of one digital film.

From the artist's abstract: "Mutual Players is a single-channel collage film created by juxtaposing movie clips from early English language films that feature actors of Chinese descent in Chinese roles. By reediting the original footage, Chuyu explores the role that visual storytelling plays in constructing cultural otherness, and subverts these master narratives by reworking the cinematic language employed to perpetrate violence on the 'othered' people."

"Mutual Players does not intend to live as a truthful representation or reportage of what constitutes and defines a Chinese identity. Instead, it presents how a group of people is reduced to a racialized concept, a silhouette. The film takes place in a mythical train ride to an imaginary 'Chinatown' to reference the recurrent theme of arrival and departure in the building of a narrative arc."

Language:
Film contains narrative in English, Cantonese, and other Southern Chinese dialects.
