The collection contains material documenting Mitchell's dissertation research on the Virginia politician David Campbell (1779-1859). Boxes 2-5 consist entirely of information on loose index cards. These materials also document Mitchell's research on the enslaved women who lived on Campbell's estate in Abington, VA. The collection also contains materials related to Mitchell's research on the Alabama physician Louise Branscomb. There are materials documenting Mitchell's professional activities and teaching career at what was then known as Troy State University. Mitchell's extensive service work in the Methodist Church at the local, regional, and national levels is also documented.

Norma Taylor Mitchell was born in Norfolk, VA, in 1936. She received a BA in History (1958) from William and Mary, and an MA (1962) and PhD (1967) from Duke University. Initially, she held positions at Union College in Kentucky and Central Methodist College in Missouri before moving to the History Department of what is now known as Troy University in Alabama in 1970 and teaching there until assuming emerita status in 1999.
Mitchell served extensively as a lay leader in the United Methodist Church beginning in 1960. Her service includes the General Commission on Archives and History (1972-1980), Alabama-West Florida Conference Chair of the Commission on the Status and Role of Women (1976-1980), Chair of the Women's History Project (1977-1980), and the Board of Directors of the Alabama-West Florida United Methodist Board Pastoral Care and Counseling (1984-1992).
