Biographical / historical:

The Mayer, Merkel & Ottmann lithography company formed in 1874 in New York when Jacob Ottmann bought into the Mayer & Merkel firm that Vincent Mayer and August Merkel, both German-Americans, had formed in 1869. The firm specialized in trade cards and maps. The firm's name changed to J. Ottmann Lithographic in 1885 upon the retirement of both Mayer and Merkel. J. Ottmann became involved with publishing the political satire magazine Puck when the magazine moved to New York from St. Louis in 1886. J. Ottmann was acquired and absorbed by the U.S. Printing and Lithographing Company in 1901.
