Collection chiefly contains letters of James L. Morgan, his wife Lucy R. (Jones) Morgan, and related family members in Georgia and Tennessee, dated from the 1860s to the 1900s. Letters primarily discuss courtship, James' business affairs in Humboldt, Tenn., family matters in Rehoboth, Georgia, and camp meetings of the Methodist and Baptist Churches. The collection also includes sermons and writings on religious topics, 4 photographs, and assorted clippings related to Wiley L. Morgan, managing editor of the Knoxville Sentinel (early 1900s), and his death in the 1950s.

Biographical / historical:

James Lafayette Morgan (1844-1914) and his wife, Lucinda R. (Jones) Morgan, were originally from Rehoboth, Georgia, but relocated to Humboldt, Tenn. in the 1870s, where James was employed as a hotel clerk in the Osborne House. James and Lucy Morgan had a son, Wiley L. Morgan (1874-), who was managing editor of the Knoxville Sentinel during the early 1900s and also president of Greenwood Cemetery Co. Related families include the Jones family and Wynne family of Georgia.

Acquisition information:
The Morgan Family Papers were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a purchase in August 1996.
