Scope and content:

Collection contains 9 DVDs of conference sessions. The Executive Producer of the DVDs is Veterans of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement, Inc. The producer is Natalie Bullock Brown/Ascension Productions, LLC.

Biographical / historical:

Freedom Summer was a campaign in the United States launched and led by volunteers in June 1964 to attempt to register as many Black voters as possible in Mississippi. It also set up Freedom Schools, Freedom Houses, and community centers in small towns across Mississippi to help the local Black population. The Freedom Summer campaign was organized by the Council of Federated Organizations, which was a coalition of the Mississippi branches of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committte, the Congress of Racial Equality, the NAACP, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

The Mississippi Freedom Summer 50th Anniversary conference was held June 25-29, 2014 at Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi, to commemorate the Freedom Summer of 1964 while also examining progress made over the 50-year time span and laying groundwork for future endeavors.
