The subseries contains various papers and records relating to the operations of the National Insurance Association. The earliest records are copies of the NIA's bylaws, beginning in 1927. Most of the subsequent papers derive from NIA meetings and conference planning, in which NCM staff were involved each year.
- Biographical / historical:
- The NIA was established in 1920 as the National Negro Insurance Association (renamed in 1950 as the National Insurance Association or NIA) after a meeting of a group of Black insurance executives in Durham, N.C. The organization was created in order to promote and represent the mutual interests of insurance companies owned and operated by African Americans. C.C. Spaulding was elected first president of the association and NC Mutual remained one of the largest member companies of the organization until its closure in 2022. NCM employees regularly served as NIA officers and as members on its Board of Directors.
