Scope and content:

This collection consist of 14 zines and artists books created by Hương Ngô. The collection shows the interdisciplinary character of Ngô's artistic practice, as it includes different media such as photography, collective narrative, and illustration. The works included in the collection explore themes such as migration, linguistic plurality, and colonialism through photographs, illustrations, maps, newspapers, cards, and collective narratives. For example, "And the State of Emergency…" explores life in a refugee camp. This work also relates to Ngô's installation "And the State of Emergency Is Also Always a State of Emergence" (2017).

The collection is comprised of Binocular/Magnifiers; Set of 3 rolodex cards with exhibit information, 2004; Bee line pocket map (4.5 x 3 inches); Escape padded tyvek envelope cards, 2004-2006; Secret School zines, 2009 (01 Language, Memory; What does Fugio mean?; 03 Gold; 05 Food); Taming a Wild Tongue, 2019; And The State of Emergency…, 2017; Let's focus on what makes you feel good; Untranslatable, 2021 (facsimile of newsprint with French script on outside); Proposals, 2017 (text explores the pursuit of a Vietnamese translation for the word "feminism.") Biographical / historical:

Hương Ngô is a feminist, interdisciplinary artist and educator born in Hong Kong and based in the USA. The main topics addressed in her work are resilience, resistance, migration, language, and colonialism. She received her BFA at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2001) and continued in Art & Technology Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (MFA, 2004). Ngô's work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, MCA Chicago, the New Museum in New York, and the Renaissance Society in Chicago, among others. She was awarded the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Grant in Vietnam in 2016 and has been described as "deftly and defiantly decolonial" by New City and "what intersectional feminist art looks like" by the Chicago Tribune. Ngô has twice received the 3Arts Award and was featured in the Prague Biennial in 2005 and Prospect.5 Triennial in 2021. Ngô was an assistant professor of Contemporary Practices at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
