Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains business and medical records of Dr. Robert C. Randolph, in the form of four medical visits notebooks, legal papers, and correspondence, all dating from the last years of the 19th century until 1919.

Biographical / historical:

Robert C. Randolph was the son of Eliza Page (Burwell) Randolph, who married Thomas H. Randolph, a Civil War veteran who was 27 in 1870; their son Robert C. was 30 in the Clarke County, Virginia census for 1900, and listed as a physician. Robert married Isabella Randolph sometime around 1896. Robert C. Randolph was thus the grandson of Lucy M. and Dr. Robert Carter Randolph (1807-1887), also a physician; Randolph senior appears in censuses for Clarke County, Virginia as a farmer, physician, and owner at one point of 31 slaves, and the father of nine children, one of whom, Thomas H., was 7 in 1850. The Randolphs were closely connected with the Burwell family of Virginia.
