Works Progress Administration Presents, 1937-1938

Physical description:

Scope and content:

Randy Riddle note: A project of the Federal Music Project, this was a 15 minute program syndicated by the government to promote the Works Progress Administration. Various WPA groups perform orchestral, vocal, and chamber works by major and minor composers. Some contain obscure works. Each program includes commercials on how WPA programs are helping create work for the unemployed in local communities. I believe the Library of Congress has at least some episodes from this series, but I'm not sure if they have these particular programs. 1937 Series, Pgm 6 Federal Music Project Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Samuel Gardner, with works by Hayden and Mozart. https://randsesotericotr.podbean.com/e/works-progress-administration-presents-1937-series-pgm-6/ 1937 Series, Pgm 12 Los Angeles Mexican Orchestra and Chorus First selection is "Golden Towers". Conducted by Jose Cantu. (not placed on blog) LOC has a copy of this disc: https://www.loc.gov/audio/?all=true&dates=1930/1939&fa=language:spanish%7Csubject:popular+music%7Csubject:mexico 1938 Series, Pgm 46 (two copies) Commonwealth Symphony and State Chorus of Boston, conducted by A. Buckingham Simpson, performing excerpts of Bizet's "Carmen". https://randsesotericotr.podbean.com/e/works-progress-administration-presents-1938-series-pgm-46/ 1938 Series, Pgm 53 Forum String Quartet of Boston performing the Lento from the String Quartet, Opus 96 by Dvorak and the Allegretto movement from the Creole Quartet by composter and artist Harry Newton Redman. Redman was a member of the New England Conservatory of Music. Only a few (three or four) of his works have been recorded and I think this is the only recording of this particular piece. https://randsesotericotr.podbean.com/e/the-works-progress-administration-presents-1938-series-pgm-53/
