Background

Scope and content:

These 25 prints by women photographers of the 20th century were collected by Durham, N.C. resident Sally Schauman. They are original prints, with the exception of one estate print by Imogen Cunningham. The collection features work by the following photographers: Berenice Abbot; Catherine Angel; Ilse Bing; Ruth Bernhard; Esther Bubley; Debbie Fleming Caffery; Sandra Russell Clark (2); Imogen Cunningham (2); Laura Gilpin; Mona Kuhn; Helen Levitt (2); Genevieve Naylor; Anne Noggle; Mary Peck; Susan Seubert (2); Joyce Tenneson; Charlotte Watts; Eudora Welty; Marion Post Wolcott; and Bayard Morgan Wootten.

Subjects range widely: there are portraits of women (Maya Angelou, Martha Graham, Carson McCullers, Marianne Moore, Eleanor Roosevelt), landscapes (sand dunes, Everglades, Canyon de Chelly), cultural studies of the American South (North Carolina people, Louisiana cemeteries), and animal and botanical images. The photographs are almost all gelatin silver, with a few platinum prints and color inkjets. Mounts range in size from 8x10 to 22x28 inches, with one panoramic print measuring 10x30 inches. Included in the collection are Schauman's obituary and funeral service program from April 2022.

When not found on the print, titles and dates derive from the appraiser's description as well as from online museum listings. Markings have been noted in the inventory by the processing archivist.
