Schulte-United was a chain of variety/department stores that began by David A. Schulte in New York, in operation primarily in the northeast United States from 1928-1954. Collection includes correspondence, design sketches, awards, and black-and-white photographs of store fixtures, merchandise display cases, and show window display designs. Collection includes photographs produced in Auburn and Peekskill, N.Y., Passaic, N.J., and Zanesville, Ohio. Acquired as part of the John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History.

Collection includes correspondence, design sketches, awards, and black-and-white photographs of store fixtures, merchandise display cases, and show window display designs. Collection includes photographs produced in Auburn and Peekskill, N.Y., Passaic, N.J., and Zanesville, Ohio.

Biographical / historical:

Schulte-United was a chain of variety stores that began by David A. Schulte in New York, in operation from 1928-1954.

David Albert Schulte first opened a tobacco shop in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1883. The business grew to a chain of street-corner variety shops under the name Schulte Retail Stores. In 1928 Schulte, United Cigar Stores and Whelan Drug Co. combined under the name Schulte-United; United Cigar pulled out the following year and the venture went bankrupt in 1931. It was acqured by the H.L. Green Co. which operated under the name Schulte-United until 1954, when the named changed to H.L. Green which continued until closing in 1972.
