- Physical description:
- Acetate and digitized nitrate film negatives. Consists of cut rolls of almost every major film format (especially 120, 127, and 135) and sheet film, with the latter being almost entirely black-and-white film. Most items are in good condition, but some show signs of damage or deterioration, and the black-and-white rolls are the most sensitive to humidity and curling.

Photographic film negatives that correspond to many photographic prints in the Photographs subseries but were found separately and left separated.

Items processed circa 1990 were arranged by subject. Items processed in 2025 were arranged by film format due to quantity. Eight rolls were found undeveloped and sent out for development.

This collection is currently being reprocessed to incorporate additional material before it becomes fully open to researchers in January 2027. Material may sometimes be unavailable because of this, especially in the remaining series: Correspondence and Writings and Speeches. Access restricted. Access to this material will be consistent with the 1991 agreement between Duke University Library, James H. Semans, and Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans. Access to any correspondence, legal papers, and financial papers is restricted and will be permitted only with prior written permission, which should be sought from the chair of the board of the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation. This restriction shall be in place until 1 January 2027, after which all material shall be considered open for research.

Records of the University's Board of Trustees which have been in existence for at least fifty years are available for scholarly research with the permission of the University Archivist.
