- Physical description:
- Primarily cardboard or plastic slides, but there are also 12 folders of stereo slides, two boxes of glass slides (cardboard slides sealed between glass), and five folders of unmounted transparencies. The color of much of this film has remained rich and vibrant in a way that it has not in corresponding photo prints, or the photo prints are black-and-white.
- Scope and content:

Photographic film positives primarily in the form of mounted color slide film meant for projection. These are almost entirely candid snapshots of the MDBTS and James H. Semans family that primarily document their home life and travel over the first 25 years of marriage. There are few events, like graduations, and far more holidays, birthdays, and vacations.
To a lesser extent, there are photos taken by Josiah C. Trent from 1937-circa 1940, like possibly of the summer he worked at a Wyoming ranch, a trip to various national parks in the American West with his mother and MDBTS, and his honeymoon in Europe with MDBTS.

Access restricted. Access to this material will be consistent with the 1991 agreement between Duke University Library, James H. Semans, and Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans. Access to any correspondence, legal papers, and financial papers is restricted and will be permitted only with prior written permission, which should be sought from the chair of the board of the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation. This restriction shall be in place until 1 January 2027, after which all material shall be considered open for research.
