Biographical / historical:

Both Cindy Watson and Garnett Harrison were raised in the South, Cindy in upstate South Carolina, and Garnett in the Mississippi Delta, Greenwood, MS. Cindy graduated from Furman University, in Greenville, SC (Psychology, 1979), and Garnett graduated from Millsaps College in Jackson, MS (History, 1975). Garnett went on to get a law degree from the Jackson School of Law at Mississippi College in 1978, and practiced family law in Mississippi from 1978-1988. Cindy moved to Arctic Alaska after college and helped start a battered women's shelter for indigenous women there. Garnett left Mississippi in 1988 in fear of her life after being disbarred for her work on child custody cases involving accusations of child sexual abuse by ex-husbands. Both had been in heterosexual marriages, and Garnett had a daughter from that marriage, and lost custody of her as a lesbian mother seven years after divorcing her husband. Cindy and Garnett met in Vermont in 1989, when Cindy was living there with her husband, Garnett was looking for work, and both were attending a Solidarity conference. Garnett returned in 1990 to take a job as state coordinator of the Vermont Network Against Domestic Violence. Cindy divorced her husband to be with Garnett, and in late 1991 they moved temporarily to the Pagoda to run the Pagoda Center while they looked for professional work in the area. They have been together ever since, have raised two adopted sons, and married legally in the 2000s. Cindy has directed the non-profit LGBT youth center in Jacksonville, JASMYN (Jacksonville Area Sexual Minority Youth Network), since the mid-1990s, and Garnett has practiced family law in nearby Kingsland, GA, since 1992.
