Lola Frances Wilson Smith was born into a sharecropping family in rural Alabama in 1917. She attended Berea College in 1936, and graduated with a degree in Biology in 1939. In 1942, she graduated from the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing, then married Clarence Edwin Smith; the couple had four children. She died in 2004.
