Background

Scope and content:

Collection consists of a scrapbook containing clippings from a number of newspapers reporting on battles and conditions in the Confederacy during the first years of the Civil War. The volumes contains clippings concerning the price of food and drugs; the role of women in the Confederacy; military operations and battles, particularly in the western theater; various Georgia regiments; Southern poetry about the war; reports of arrests, depredations, and atrocities by Union troops; various Confederate leaders and generals; summaries of conditions of enslaved people and newly freed Black people; derogatory references to Abraham Lincoln; and the foreign relations of the Confederacy.

Biographical / historical:

Moses J. Solomons was a Jewish grocer and druggist originally from Georgetown, S.C., who later moved to Savannah, Georgia. He and his brothers, Joseph M. Solomons and Abraham Solomons, appears to have owned a pharmacy in Savannah following the American Civil War. The Solomons were enslavers; according to the 1860 U.S. Census, Moses enslaved three people in Savannah. Some Solomons fought for the Confederate Army. Moses J. appears to have married twice - his first wife, Frances Joseph, died in 1856. He later married Henrietta Solomons in 1870 and the couple had several children.
