Abstract:
The Strange Fire Collective was a group of interdisciplinary artists, curators, and writers founded in 2015 by Jess T. Dugan, Rafael Soldi, Hamidah Glasgow, and Zora J. Murff to support the work of women, people of color, and queer and trans artists. Materials include physical and digital records such as printed ephemera, poster reproductions and sheets, exhibition guides and catalogs, social media files, administrative materials, and other files collected by Strange Fire Collective's website spanning 2015-2023. Topics explored in the collection include expressions of identity, gender and sexuality, racism, and current political and social issues. Acquired as part of the Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture and the Archive of Documentary Arts.

Background

Scope and content:

The Strange Fire Collective records focus on works from women artists, artists of color, LGBTQ+ artists, alongside the internal activities of the Strange Fire Collective spanning 2015-2023 and materials from the collective's website. Collection materials consist of physical and digital items created by staff of Strange Fire Collective and various contributing members of the collective. Physical materials include printed ephemera, poster reproductions, exhibition and gallery guides, and other assorted materials. Digital materials include meeting logs, guidelines, photos, social media files from Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, video files, essays, interviews, various materials pulled from Strange Fire Collective's website, and other assorted materials. Topics throughout the collection include explorations of identity, racism, gender and sexuality, and current political and social issues.

Biographical / historical:

Strange Fire Collective was formed in 2015 by founding members Jess T. Dugan, Rafael Soldi, Hamidah Glasgow, and Zora J. Murff. Dedicated to increasing the visibility of work by women, people of color, and queer and trans artists, the group was made of interdisciplinary artists, curators, writers, and educators. The collective was a volunteer-based organization that was designed to create dialogue and community with publications, exhibitions, and events that were affordable, accessible, and socially relevant. Strange Fire Collective ceased publishing in print and online in December 2022.
