Background

Scope and content:

49 watercolor, gouache, and graphite paintings of Hummingbirds by Elizabeth Symonds. Each painting is accompanied by a glassine sheet with the Latin name and English equivalent of the hummingbird written in ink (except for number xliv which is missing). The watercolors were formerly bound in a volume with a manuscript title page. The volume was previously disbound and only a photocopy of the title page remains.

Biographical / historical:

Elizabeth Symonds nee� Turner was born in London in February 1796. She married Reverend Thomas Powell Symonds of Pengethley Manor, Peterstow, Ross-on-Wye England, in 1816, where they resided.

Acquisition information:
Hummingbirds painted by Elizabeth Symonds were received by the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book Manuscript Library as a gift from Jett Greenberg, purchased from Arader Galleries in 2022.
