Background

Scope and content:

Collection comprises four letters written by Campbell, and a published article on Campbell and Italian General Guglielmo Pepe. Campbell's letter of Aug. 28, 1825, to General Pepe concerned their friendship and joy that the news of Pepe's death was untrue; difficulty with Campbell's son Thomas; Campbell's effort to establish the University of London; and his happiness at Pisa's liberation. Another letter to General Pepe dates sometime during 1822-1829 when Campbell was living at No. 10 Upper Seymour St., where the letter was addressed. Campbell advised Pepe about suitable places near London for his summer residence. Campbell's third letter was about dinner and social arrangements with several relatives. The letter is undated, but reference in the letter to a nephew and his bride indicates that it dates to circa 1838. In the final letter, Campbell was visiting R. Arkwright at Stoke near Bakewell, Derbyshire, when he requested that a copy of the last edition of his poems be sent there. The letter is dated only Oct. 6. The published article (June 1998) contains transcriptions of Campbell's letters in this collection to General Pepe, among other information.
