Letters and drafts sent by Pope to Tilley throughout the duration of World War II. In the early war years, Pope was in training in Norfolk, Va., and along with daily army news and commentary on Virginia's climate, he describes racial tension and power blackouts. He also describes the 1942 August murder of a Black man by a bus driver for refusing to sit at the rear of the bus.
Pope also served as an editor for his base's newsletter, The Blast!, and sent several issues to Tilley which were removed for serials cataloging in 2026.
