Abstract:
William Hyde (1783-1861) and son William Hyde Jr. (1808-1873) were physicians of Stonington, Connecticut. This collection consists primarily of financial records (1841-1865) containing the names and treatments of patients in Connecticut and surrounding states, as well as a petition to Congress related to the Crittenden Compromise, and the elder Hyde's 1805 medical certificate.

Background

Scope and content:

This collection documents the medical practice of Connecticut physicians William Hyde and William Hyde Jr. (William Hyde & Son), mainly between the years 1841-1865. It consists primarily of financial records, including an account book, day books, and a ledger with index. The financial documents contain the names of patients and treatments, as well as details of the Hydes' travel and consultations with other physicians. Most of the patients were located in Connecticut, with some in neighboring states.

The collection also includes various loose documents that were removed from the day books, including a foolscap bearing sums owed and names of clients and three drafts of an 1861 petition to the U.S. Congress requesting that the Crittenden Compromise be adopted by all states in order to peacefully preserve the Union. Also present is an 1805 certificate to practice medicine, issued by the Connecticut State Medical Society to the elder William Hyde.

Biographical / historical:

William Hyde (1783-1861) and son William Hyde Jr. (1808-1873) were physicians of Stonington, Connecticut, who practiced medicine together as William Hyde & Son. In his early years, the elder Hyde was referred to as "Junior," as his father's name was also William.
