The Knights of Malta, also known as the Knights Hospitaller, refers to a religious, military order established during the Crusades to serve as defender of the Holy Lands; it was based in Malta under the Spanish viceroy of Sicily, and is now headquartered in Rome, renamed the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (SMOM).
