Writings, 1956-2016

Scope and content:

Material related to Treynor's published and unpublished writings, such as annotated drafts, proofs, reprints, notes, graphs, transparencies, and correspondence. He published four articles under two pen names—deceased economists Walter Bagehot (1971, 1972) and Alf(red) Marshall (1971, 1974)—for reasons unknown. He mostly wrote without a coauthor, but there are three files with economist Fischer Black, two with financial analyst Robert Ferguson, and two with corporate law professor Lynn Stout. Additionally, four files include annotations or regression analysis from his daughter Wendy Treynor, who double majored in economics and mathematics at Georgetown University before pursuing a career in social psychology.

Most of these files are for articles (including short case studies) that were published in the Financial Analysts Journal (FAJ) and Journal of Investment Management (JOIM), but he did author/coauthor three books, and there are another three book projects present. Some of these papers were presented, including nine at the Institute for Quantitative Research in Finance (Q Group) seminars, files for which can be found in the Conferences and Organizations subseries of the Professional Activities series. Of note is the paper where he first introduced the capital asset pricing model (CAPM): "Market Value, Time, and Risk" (1961), which he split into "Towards a Theory of Market Value of Risky Assets" (1962; published in Korajczyk 1999), and "Implications for the Theory of Finance" (1963). Other subjects include accounting, active management, inflation, investment value, risk, trading, and unemployment.
