Background

Scope and content:

Contains primarily printed material and form letters concerning the Student Volunteer Movement, the YWCA, other related religious organizations, and the Methodist Episcopal Church. As a Duke student, Rev. Bowman was active in North Carolina chapters of these movements, and the papers provide information regarding student religious life and activity in the period. The collection ranges in date from 1928-1931.

Biographical / historical:

Rev. Dr. Clarice M. Bowman was a woman of the clergy. She graduated with B.A., B.D. and A.M. degrees from Duke University and was the Jonathan Fisher Professor Emeritus at Bangor Theological Seminary. She was one of the first women to receive a degree from the Duke School of Religion when she graduated in 1933. Bowman received the Divinity School's Distinguished Alumni Award in 1984. She died in 1998.

The Reverend Dr. Clarice M. Bowman papers were received by the University Archives as a transfer in 1973.
