Abstract:
Peter Burian joined the faculty of the Department of Classical Studies at Duke University in 1968. Throughout his time at Duke, Burian chaired the department and served on committees including the Advisory Committee of Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, the Comparative Literature Committee, and the Policy Implementation Committee. The collection largely consists of correspondence, memoranda, proposals, and reports related to committees Burian served on at Duke. Also includes materials for the Comparative Literature Program.

Background

Scope and content:

This collection largely consists of materials related to committees Burian served on while at Duke. Includes MALS program and Comparative Literature Committee correspondence, memoranda, and proposals. Collection contains a strategic plan for the Kenan Institute for Ethics and correspondence from Burian's time as Chair of the Program in Comparative Literature as well as course proposals and memoranda for the program. Also includes reports; correspondence from other institutions, Duke administrators, and businesses; and photocopies of articles for the Policy Implementation Committee for South Africa divestment.

Biographical / historical:

Peter Burian joined the faculty of the Classical Studies Department at Trinity College of Arts and Sciences in 1968. During his time at Duke, Burian taught courses in Classical Studies and Comparative Literature. He served on different committees including several terms on the Academic Council, the Advisory Committee of Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, and the Comparative Literature Committee, which worked to establish the Comparative Literature Program at Duke. Burian also served on the Policy Implementation Committee on South African Divestment which was formed to administer policies to assist with the university's divestment from companies operating in South Africa to protest apartheid. From 1985 to 1988, Burian was Chair of the Program in Comparative Literature, and from 2003 to 2006, he served as the Chair of the Department of Classical Studies. In 2012, Burian was appointed Dean of the Humanities. He became Professor Emeritus of Classical Studies in 2015.
